Almost 60,000 Bayern fans have now signed a petition calling on the club’s bosses to keep De Ligt.

Neville: Composed Ashworth will help Ten Hag at Man Utd

Gary Neville believes the appointment of Dan Ashworth will steady the ship for Manchester United, and give Erik ten Hag, who signed a new deal at Old Trafford earlier this week, a better chance of succeeding at the club.

“It was a miserable season for Man Utd in the Premier League and if Ten Hag hadn’t won the FA Cup final he’d have been in big trouble,” Neville told Sky Sports News.

“Winning against Man City, two trophies in two years. Man Utd flirted with other managers and decided they couldn’t find someone who could do the job better than Ten Hag.

“I’m happy in the end he stayed. He’s been given another contract to give him some strength. He had one year left and the idea of this ticking clock, we’d be asking him the question and the club every 10 minutes [if he only had a year on his contract].

“He’ll have to perform this season – this doesn’t let him off the hook. But I’m hopeful all the appointments around ETH – obviously the new CEO but particularly Dan Ashworth who brings composure, a key person in building the foundations of the new England look – we won’t get a situation where Man Utd are panicking in a transfer window and shooting from the hip as they have done in years gone by Thapcam.

“It will be more measured. If they can’t get who they want they won’t buy anyone. They will make sure they’re quite focused and precise in what they do moving forward  which should give Ten Hag more stability and advice around him which hopefully will help him.”

Man Utd continue ‘positive’ talks over Zirkzee and De Ligt moves

Manchester United’s talks over the potential signings of Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt have been described as “positive”.

United have made it clear they will meet the £34m release clause in Zirkzee’s Bologna contract and are in discussions with the forward’s representatives over personal terms.

Giovanni Sartori, Bologna’s sporting director, said earlier this week that Zirkzee will “99.9 per cent leave this summer”.

Discussions continue with Bayern Munich over a fee for De Ligt, who the German club value at £42.5m plus add-ons.

There is a growing feeling all parties want to conclude a deal for De Ligt.

Zirkzee and De Ligt are both in the Netherlands squad at Euro 2024 but are yet to feature in the tournament.
